Two numbers, two registers
A KVK number has eight digits and belongs to an entry in the Dutch Business Register. An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) has 20 letters and digits. You can search global LEI records through GLEIF. An organisation can have both numbers; you cannot calculate one from the other.
When might you need an LEI?
An LEI may be needed for financial transactions. Whether your organisation needs one depends on the transaction and your bank's or asset manager's requirements. Ask them which identifier they require. A KVK extract or our Company Profile does not replace LEI registration.
Check the organisation behind the number
Look up the KVK number in the Dutch Business Register and compare the registered name. Look up any LEI separately through GLEIF; check the name, country and registration status. According to GLEIF, ‘LAPSED’ means the periodic verification was not renewed on time. It does not mean the organisation has ceased to exist. Ask the recipient whether they accept that status.
No LEI in the search results?
Not every registered business has an LEI. First check that you are looking at the right legal entity, especially within a group. If the bank or recipient requires an LEI, use KVK's application route or another accredited LEI issuer. For other Dutch identifiers, read our guide to KVK numbers, RSIN and VAT IDs.
